They are republishing “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” without Stephen Gammel’s terrifying artwork. This image of Harold, the scarecrow who comes to life and skins a farmer, is forever burned into my psyche. The images from these “children’s books” are so chilling and nightmare-inducing that it is hard to visualize these books without them. I know that part of growing up is letting go of cherished childhood memorabilia but there are some things that are sacred and should just be left alone… this is one of them.
Here’s the story.

Why would they republish these without the illustrations?! I mean, granted, I read this in the fourth grade, and I guess if I were a parent I wouldn’t want my kid reading them…but the horror they ensued then only made me appreciate them now. Wah :c

The art in these books were perfect.
